The movie “The Upside” boasts the claim “based on a true story” and if that is true then there truly are great people in the world. The film follows a man down on his luck after leaving prison.

Young Dell (Kevin Hart) is the character that audiences would come to love is job searching when he by shear miracle finds Mr. Phillip Lacrosse (Bryan Cranston). Lacrosse is an extremely wealthy man who is a quadriplegic and needs a new “Life Auxiliary” after he fired his previous one.

Dell finds his way into his life and Lacrosse decides that regardless of his lack of any medical training, to hire him. This takes Dell into a world he has never entered before and down some crazy roads.

This also gives Phillip a new lease on life. Living with Dell is practically like living with a comedian for Mr. Lacrosse and he savors every minute.

As things progress love, loss and life get in the way and throw young Dell and Lacrosse some curve balls that neither would have expected.

There was however a lot of controversy in regard to the making of this film. Bryan Cranston personally received backlash for playing a quadriplegic character when there are actors that fill those slots and there for Cranston was taking their role as “an acting minority.”

In the end however, Cranston stood by the decisions of the movie makers and proceeded and even defended his slot in the movie. Hart remained quiet to this situation after he himself received backlash for an unrelated issue.

Even through all of this controversy, the movie still beat out the new film of the season, Aquaman in the box office.

In the end the movie features as much “feel-good” factor as it does comedy, and an equal abundance at that.

If looking for a comedy for a date or a feel-good movie for you friends. The Upside will deliver, and in full.
