Coaches formula for team building

Kirkwood Community   College women’s basketball team have played 22 games this season so far. As of Jan. 23, Kirkwood women’s basketball is ranked as 7th in NJCAA division II conference but the season is not over as the coaches continue to build up the team moral.

According to Head Coach Muhl their success has been a process. After having suffered a major defeat versus Illinois Central College, Muhl said, “We figured out we need to do somethings, daily. On a practice schedule and on a game schedule, and I say that’s where it probably started going the right direction.”

Muhl added, “I think they had to grow up. That’s one big thing, they got humbled at that game so they had to grow up and figure out it’s notgoing into every game and figuring it’s a high school game. It’s more of a ‘people would like to beat you.’ That changed the mentality and the mindset of how they approached things.”

Assistant Coach Jen Francescon explained a challenge they faced.  “It’s a whole different transition and with that many new people at the beginning we had a lot of challenges. You (a coach) just try and get them dialed in to school and then what we’re trying to accomplish as a team,” she said.

Chemistry is one of the most important parts of a team, from coaches to the players. “Just understanding what we ask of them and demand, they’ve started to figure that out. It usually happens about this time of the year right after Christmas,” Francescon said. Basketball season is not over yet as improvement can still be made on and off the court. “We’re still dealing with some immature things with the kids just not knowing when to draw the line between ‘yeah we’re here and having fun’ but we’re also here to work. So, we’re still trying to find that aspect of our group, but it’s getting there,” Francescon said.
