The parking lot at Kirkwood Community College Linn County Regional Center in Hiawatha was filled to almost capacity on Feb. 23 as KZIA 102.9 and the regional center partnered up to host Gown Town.

Gown Town is an annual event where teens can come in and find their prom dress, shoes and accessories for no charge.

People could donate their gently used prom dress at any Citywide Cleaners Location, which took care of cleaning the dresses, the Kirkwood Linn County Regional Center and at Herteen and Stocker Jewelers in Iowa City and even local high schools had drop off spots.

The Kirkwood Linn County Regional Center opened its doors for Gown Town at noon so students could start shopping for dresses.

By 12:30 p.m. there were over 100 girls, mothers, a few fathers and an occasional boyfriend lining both sides of the hall that led to a large open, roomy area that was lined with racks with gowns in every style, size and color and tables of shoes to match. The event ran til 3 p.m.

On average a girl can spend up to $1,000 or more on prom between shoes, hair, dress, and accessories. Gown Town is an opportunity for people to be still able to enjoy their junior/senior prom.

One father who didn’t want to be identified said, “This is a great thing, you can see that by all the smiles as they walk by to try on their dresses.”

According to Z 102.9’s Clare Duffy, of the Morning Scramble, “This is our 4th year here at Kirkwood and it’s great. ”

Duffy replied, “We have over 1,000 dresses here and more down in Iowa City at Herteen and Stocker Jewelers which held the Iowa City Gown Town; whatever is left over is stored here at Kirkwood. They will be saved for next year.”
