On Feb. 15 Kirkwood Community College students, volunteer staff members and families  gathered at the Rec Center on campus to hold this year’s For the Kids (FTK) Dance Marathon.

As students arrived for the night’s events, they got a free t-shirt. The night included dancing, music, games and prizes. The Kirkwood Café provided walking tacos to participants.

According to Student Life Housing Coordinator Shelby Crist, “This year, Kirkwood students worked hard to earn even more funds than they did last year. At 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, students revealed their total which was $13,526.03.  This amount is $526 more than what was raised last year.”

Crist added, “We raised $11,000 in the last 10 days of the event and $5,000 of that was raised in the last 48 hours leading up to the reveal total.  The best thing about this total is 100% of the funds raised by the 81 students involved will be donated to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital to directly help families with children who are facing life-threatening illnesses.”

Crist also said the sponsors played a big role in making the event possible. Some of this year’s sponsors were  Ruffalo Noel Levitz, Reserve at Kirkwood, Kirkwood Court & Campus View, Village West and Eagle’s Pointe. .

Dance Marathon is a nationally recognized event held on 300 college and university campuses across the nation and recently public schools of all levels are getting involved, too.

Kirkwood is currently the only community college that hosts a Dance Marathon event. This is Kirkwood’s third year hosting the event under the banner Kirkwood Dance Marathon (KDM). From 2011 to 2017 they KCC partnered with Mount Mercy University and Coe College and was the first multi-school dance marathon in the nation.
