Airline travel can be a breeze with proper planning and follow-through

Spring break allows students an opportunity to get away from academic activities and have some fun. Due to ever-changing rules and regulations, flying can be a daunting task for even an experienced jetsetter.

Make sure to check with your airline a few days prior to your flight not just for baggage information but also for any other airline-specific rules. If you find yourself having to fly with more than one company, follow the strictest rules so you are covered for all legs of the journey.

The Transportation Security Agency (TSA) is a government entity that also has several rules in place for safety when flying. Their regulations regarding what can and cannot be taken on the plane as well as any limits for a variety of items are also constantly changing and being updated so TSA recommends you visit their website or contact them in advance of your trip to make sure you have the most up to date information.

One of the most encountered restriction is when it comes to liquids one may want in a carry-on, such as shampoo. This is a strict rule not only for the amount you can have but also how it is transported.

It is known as the 3-1-1 rule: less than 3.4 oz. of liquid per container, all items must fit in one-quart sized sandwich baggie and each passenger can only have 1 bag of liquids each. Anything larger must be stored in checked baggage.

In order to even board the plane in the United States, all passengers over the age of 18 must show proper identification. In addition, as of Oct. 1, 2020, the state of Iowa is going to require additional verification methods when issuing ID cards and driver’s licenses that are valid for airline travel.

If traveling internationally, it is recommended to arrive at the airport at least 3 hours early and the passenger has to have the proper passport. There are expenses and official documents as well as a processing time frame associated with obtaining a passport that can vary so this is usually top priority so make sure to find out all the details and get this process started as soon as you can.

Despite all of the rules and regulations, it is important to remember that there are resources available to help you with everything you need to fly and keep everyone as safe as possible. Some may seem like a hassle and yes, there is a lot to consider however with proper planning and cooperation, much of the unnecessary stress of traveling will be gone and you can get to enjoying your trip sooner.
