The Kirkwood Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams competed in the regional championship March 5 - 10.

Both teams played Southwestern Community College for the first game of three, then Des Moines Area Community College for the second round of the championship.

After the first regional game, Kirkwood Women’s Head Coach Kim Muhl said, “Every team is different when that game could be the last of the season. Everyone plays with a different sense of urgency.”

Both teams did make it to the regional championships and played against North Iowa Area Community College for the title.

The women’s basketball team lost with a score of 77-70. In relation to how the women’s team played, Men’s Head Coach Bryan Peterson said, “Coach Muhl did a great job of improving the team as the year went on. They dealt with a lot of adversity and injuries. I thought he did a great job of keeping them going in the right direction.”

The men’s team won after the Eagles were able to pull ahead in the second half and win with a score 84-72.

This is the second regional championship for Head Coach Bryan Peterson and his sixth season as head coach at Kirkwood.

The last time the men’s team went to nationals was in 2016 where the team won 83-76 against Triton College.

This year Peterson said their national championship plan is to “continue to work hard and be who we are. We feel we have a group that is capable of having success over in Danville if we continue to stay together and play Kirkwood basketball.”

The men’s basketball team will play North Central Missouri College for the first round of nationals on Tuesday, March 19, at Danville, Ill.
