Simple suggestions to combat pressures of studying for finals

As finals week approaches, it’s tempting to allow ourselves to give into the stress of doing well or of falling down the rabbit hole with worrying thoughts.

Of course, rising stress levels are no good for one’s ability to retain information, so it’s important to stay calm and focus on the long term goal.

The issue isn’t always studying itself but instead, where does one start? The weight of multiple classes combined, as well as commitments from outside sources can be overwhelming. How does one prevent the stress, anguish and fear? Luckily, there are multiple solutions to this problem.

One common way to get ready for finals is to get on a steady sleep schedule. It may be tempting to stay awake until the wee hours of the morning to binge watch a new season of the hottest show, but that kind of behavior can wait until after final exams are over and done with. Training the body to stay on a consistent sleep schedule will make it more likely for the body to be able to rest the big night before the test.

While it may seem like a good idea to stay up late to study, a well-rested mind would disagree. Along with resting the body, be sure to take care of the mind. Frequent and short breaks keep the study material from becoming too overwhelming. These breaks can be scheduled by time or section that is being studied, and can be as short as a few minutes.

When studying, don’t limit yourself to reviewing the study guide. Textbooks can be costly so  might as well get some worth out of what you paid for when studying.

Lastly, make sure to review or rewrite the study guide to retain information. Any combination of these studying tips could help improve your grade significantly.

Studying for finals can be stressful, but with the right attitude and study skills, exam pressures can be overcome.
