Outstanding Interior Design student Skyler Shield is a graduating sophomore. Throughout her time at Kirkwood Community College she was able to explore her field in ways that were hands on. Shield said Kirkwood allowed her to go from being an undecided student to being set on a chosen career.

Q: Why did you choose Kirkwood?

A: I chose Kirkwood because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do as a career. As I was attending classes at the Iowa City building to complete my gen eds, I was introduced to the Interior Design program Kirkwood had to offer. Since the program is ranked so high in the state, I decided it would be best to go here because it is a fast-two-year program. You will then get a job soon after graduation. And, I wanted to stay closer to home.

Q: What are your plans after Kirkwood?

A: My plans after Kirkwood is to be actively looking for a job in the Iowa City/Des Moines area in either residential or commercial design. During July I will be going on my second study abroad trip with the program to Italy. The previous year we went to Australia.

Q: What is your favorite memory at Kirkwood?

A: A favorite memory at Kirkwood would have to be all the late nights in the studio, getting to hang out with your new friends while you are all stressing about the upcoming deadline on a project. We all enjoyed watching movies, telling stories and ordering in food while we crunched to get things done.

Q: What inspired you?

A: I am inspired everyday by my professor and classmates, to work a little harder each day, sending out another email to a possible employer and to just keep going after your dreams and what you want to get out of this couple of years.

Q: What does being named Outstanding student mean to you?

A: Being named outstanding student means a whole lot to me. In high school, I was never named any type of award but then coming to this college and program and being named that in my last semester here makes me feel like I am doing something right and I have chosen the correct career path for myself.
