Outstanding Student, Shane Monaghan

Shane Monaghan is what he likes to call a “super sophomore,” as he plans to come back next semester to continue working in the art of glass.

He said one of his favorite shapes when working with hot glass is called a “dinosaur,  which has a wide base and long neck like a Brachiosaurus.”

Shane said he also sells many of his artworks including the most popular “sassy bottles,” which are pieces that incorporate a person’s personality into the art.

Q: Why did you choose Kirkwood?

A: My grades weren’t great in high school and I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, so I thought that Kirkwood was pretty cheap and I have friends that go there, I’ve heard good things about them.

Q: What are your plans after KCC?

A: My plan right now is to spend one more year at Kirkwood, practicing glass blowing and getting better at that and then going on to a bachelor’s fine arts program somewhere in the country.

Q: What is your favorite memory while attending Kirkwood?

A: I used to be involved with ceramics a bit. Once or twice a semester they will have a wood fire, just in the back of the Art Annex and wood fire pottery is beautiful. It’s just a real community gathering, getting together and bringing food, throwing wood into the kiln. That’s what it would be for me.

Q: What inspired or motivated you?

A: Just my passion for glass, I used to think I knew what passion was, and I know this is going to sound really cliché, for me passion has really been defined by my experience with glass.

Q: Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood.

Outside of Kirkwood I really don’t do that much. I like designing what I want to make in here, just making plans for the next project I have in mind.

Q: What does being named OS mean to you?

It’s nice to have recognition and it feels good to be rewarded. But it’s not something that will change how I really see myself or how I go about making my work.
