As local police and fire departments arrived at Kirkwood Community College on Friday, April 12, onlookers could not help but wonder what was going on, according to Criminal Justice Program Coordinator Joe Schmitz.

Law enforcement and emergency personnel were on campus to assist in the second annual mock crime scene held in Cedar Hall. This event was for students studying criminal justice at Kirkwood. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a staged death investigation.

In small groups, students viewed the crime scene, listened to investigators, and asked questions to determine how the victim may have died.

After each group had completed their investigation, they listened to a short presentation from Trish Mehaffey, Cedar Rapids Gazette courts reporter and Greg Buelow, Cedar Rapids Public Safety communications coordinator.

Mehaffey, as a member of the media, stressed the importance of not interfering with investigations but also seeking information to provide to the public.

Buelow discussed the relationship law enforcement has with the media and provided students with tips on maintaining professionalism.

Schmitz, Mehaffey and Buelow also shared personal real-world experiences from their time in the industry.
