A new age of baseball at Kirkwood Community College has begun this spring. Todd Rima began his career as the Eagles head coach this season after 11 years at the helm of North Iowa Area Community College's baseball program.

"I'm very excited about being here," Rima said. "It's been great for me and my family."

While coaching at NIACC, Rima averaged over 30 wins per season and won the ICCAC conference title in 2005. Rima said that it was an extremely tough decision to relocate his family to Cedar Rapids but after visiting the campus he said he knew it was the place he wanted to be.

The Eagles' baseball squad is looking to bounce back after finishing with a losing record and sixth-place in the conference last season.

"The team is very motivated and unified," Rima said. "Their approach in the pre-season has been fantastic."

Attitude and effort are the two keys to success, according to Rima. He said their main goal is to stay focused on showing up and playing hard in every game. The wins and finishing at the top of the league will then take care of itself, Rima said.

Rima noted that he is happy with the way the players have bought into the team's philosophy.

Assistant coaches Tyler Howe and Casey Pauli return to the lineup this season.

"I feel very fortunate to have Casey Pauli and Tyler Howe on the staff," Rima said. "They're tremendous coaches."

The Eagles return First-Team All-ICCAC third baseman Dairo Gonzalez, who finished sixth in the NJCAA Division II for homeruns last season with 13. Also returning to the lineup is pitcher Collin Belk, who posted a 4-2 record against ICCAC opponents last year.

Kirkwood is 2-0 this season after winning both games of a double-header against College of DuPage on Feb. 11.

The Eagles take the mound at home on March 23 against Southeastern Community College.
