While some students are planning on spending vacation on the road, others are planning to stay closer to home. Here are some ways for students to keep entertained if they plan on staying in the area.

There are several bowling alleys in the Cedar Rapids area, all of which offer special discounts at various times. On Sunday and Wednesday nights, Westdale Bowling Center on the southwest side of town offers quartermania. They also have x-treme glow bowling and lazer tag. The Cedar Rapids Bowling Center on the northeast side currently has a coupon on its website for buy two games get the third game free.

For students staying close to home this spring break going to a matinée or a second-run theater, like Collins Road Theatres, provides lower cost entertainment. Movies such as "Need for Speed", "The Art of Steel" and "Mr. Peabody and Sherman" will be playing in theaters along with many more.

Students searching for a bite to eat can look into the local restaurant scene over break. For pizza, students can check out Zoey's Pizzeria, located near Marion Square or Leonardo's Restaurant & Pizza, located on 16th Avenue SW. If the goal is affordable with large portion sizes, the Starlite Room on First Avenue NE and Joensy's Restaurant on Wiley Boulevard SW, can deliver that. With the Starlite Room's half-pound Superburger and Joensy's tenderloins, students will not walk away hungry.

Even though classes will not be held during spring break, some areas of campus will still be open. Josh Cunningham, human services emphasis, said, "I'll probably do some spring cleaning and work out at the Kirkwood Rec Center over spring break." The Rec Center's facilities will be open to students over break on Monday through Thursday, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Rec will be closed on weekends during break.

Kali Bena, early childhood education/para educator emphasis, said, "I will be spending time with my daughter and working on papers that are due after break. I might also take her out to a movie for a little fun over spring break."

There are also many options for free entertainment. Although recent temperatures have been below normal for this time of year, most area parks and trails are still open. Jones Park and Shaver Park both have Frisbee golf courses and the all-weather Cedar River Trail offers 12 miles of paved pathways through Cedar Rapids.  For a complete list of area hiking trails, logon to

Taking time to relax and being with friends and family is also a priority for some students. Jade Healy, nursing emphasis, said, "My plans for spring break are just working and hanging out with my daughter."
