With gas prices on the rise, getting to and from school may become more troublesome for Kirkwood Community College students living off campus. According to www.aaa.com the average gas price in Iowa is currently $3.63 for mid-grade fuel.

According to www.gasbuddy.com, over the past year gas prices have fluctuated as high as $3.85 and as low as $2.70. With this kind of price roller-coaster, it can affect students' finances quite a bit, especially when they live out of the Cedar Rapids area.

"I'd say it takes about $60 to fill up my gas tank per week," said Kelby Wagner, Liberal Arts emphasis, who drives a Ford Taurus to and from school every day. "I wish I lived a little closer because it wouldn't take as long to get here and I wouldn't spend as much on fuel."

Although rising gas prices are affecting students who live off campus, those who live on campus, such as Carly Mills, education emphasis, walk to Kirkwood every day. Never having to pay for gas has helped her finances quite a bit. "I always make fun of my friends because they have to pay for gas and I don't," said Mills.

For those who live off campus and are unable to walk to school, carpooling is one way to cut down on gas usage. "I would carpool if I have someone else who lived near me. I have had to pay for my own gas, it comes out of my pocket and it's expensive," said Wagner.

Kirkwood offers a carpooling program called RideShare. According to www.kirkwood.edu/rideshare, students have the opportunity to set up or join a carpool. The website states, "It saves money, helps reduce traffic congestion, lets you meet other people and reduces pollution."
