Spring is just around the corner, which means softball fans will soon be able to pick up a grilled hotdog with a cool refreshment and watch the Kirkwood Community College Eagles swing into action.

"Competitive play, hard work, good character and a national championship," are what head coach Joe Yegge said he is anxious to see from the team this coming season.

The Eagles received the no. 6 rank in the preseason poll. The team returns five sophomores from last year's squad that finished the season ranked ninth in the nation. Kayla Tatge, a first-team All-American last season, returns to the field at the utility position. She is joined by Haylee Krack at third base, Kelsie Campbell and Kristen Winter as infielders and Shelby Crist in the outfield. The team also welcomed in 14 freshman recruits for this season.

Two Kirkwood softball alumni rejoined the program this season as assistant coaches. Kylee Knop, a two-time All-American pitcher for Kirkwood, will be the pitching coach for this season. Carlie Schnoebelen, who was also a two-time All-American for the Eagles, will begin her first season as an assistant coach.

Coming to Kirkwood for her first time is assistant coach Allie Galvin. A Cedar Rapids native, Galvin played softball for the University of Northern Iowa and started in the outfield for three seasons.

Yegge is back for his sixth season at the head coaching position. With Yegge as coach, the Eagles have won over 40 games in each of the past four seasons and have produced 20 players who were named as NJCAA and NFCA All-Americans. The Eagles placed seventh in the nation in the 2011 season.

Kirkwood played its season opener on March 1 in Rochester, Minn. against Grandview University, spliting the double-header 1-1. The Eagles will play three double-headers at home on March 23, 24, and 26.
