Earlier this season critics were ready to write-off the Kirkwood Community College men's basketball team. That was before Wednesday night.

In a thriller that went down to the wire in overtime, the Eagles showed their grit as they advanced to the semifinals in the regional tournament with victory over North Iowa Area Community College at home.

After leading by 12 in the second half, a 13-point swing in 2:17 gave NIACC the lead with 12:33 remaining.

The two teams traded leads six times over the next three minutes, before NIACC tied the games with seconds to go, sending the game to overtime.

Shaun Manego scored a three-pointer to put the Eagles ahead by five and J.C. Fuller dunked the ball with 20 remaining to seal the deal on Kirkwood's 89-83 victory in overtime.

Leading scorer for the Eagles, Kasey Semlar, was on the bench with an injury.

Kirkwood will host the semifinal game on Friday against Ellsworth.

The regular season finished in a win March 2 on the road at Des Moines Area Community College. Kirkwood won 96-86 after leading the game at halftime, 45-38. The Eagles knocked down 27 of 36 shots from the free throw line, allowing them to maintain a steady lead. Sophomore Kasey Semlar led in scoring for the night landing 27 points with 12 coming from 3-pointers.

The men wrapped up February with a 4-2 record for the month. On Feb. 23 Ellsworth revenged an earlier loss to the Eagles 73-65. Kirkwood's final regular season record stood at 18-12.
