The C-Store at Kirkwood Community College's campus in Cedar Rapids will close Wednesday, making way for an electronics store.

Julie Copeland, manager of the bookstore and C-Store, said the C-Store will be remodeled into an electronics store called Eagle Tech.  She said the space won't just be "for buying stuff;" it will provide tech support from "certified" employees.

The Nest, an area within Eagle Tech, will provide free troubleshooting that ranges from help with devices, software and "repairs on site."

Copeland said there will also be a "Land and Learn" lounge space, with "casual, comfy seating" that will provide group tutorials.  She added that partnerships with vendors such as Dell and Microsoft will lead to tutorials from them as well as from employees of The Nest.  The space will be available for use by teachers and other groups as well when tutorials are not in session.

Copeland said visits were made to community colleges around the Midwest to see what "needed to be provided" to remain at the "forefront of community colleges."  Feedback was also solicited from students and staff to see what needs were not being met.

In its heyday, the C-Store was popular for its Starbucks coffee and Freshens smoothies. Those offerings were moved to Sammy's Café in Iowa Hall last spring.  Sammy's is operated by Sodexo, a corporation that handles food operations at a number of colleges.

David Ward, graphic communications major, said the C-Store closing will make it "way more inconvenient" for students and said he is "not excited" about the new concept.

Hannah VanDeusen, a high school student who takes classes at Kirkwood, echoed Ward's feelings, saying she uses the C-Store as a place to do "homework and study" while waiting for her parents to pick her up.

Copeland said coolers with pop and other beverages will be located across the hall in the bookstore.  This leaves food vending only at Sammy's Café and at vending machines scattered around campus.

According to Kirkwood officials, renovation work will begin April 1.  Copeland said the goal of completion was "sometime in November."
