Active Minds raises awareness

By Nick Edwards
On March 7, 2014

After losing her brother to suicide, Alison Malmon, University of Pennsylvania alumni, created Active Minds. Malmon created the club with the goal to reduce stigma so students will feel comfortable to seek assistance. Kirkwood Community College's campus-based chapter raises awareness of issues such as suicide, mental health and depression.

Darin Kriener, accounting emphasis, said, "The meetings usually involve discussion about what is alright to say and what is not alright to say to someone with a mental illness."

In their most recent meeting, the group discussed the effects of eating disorders. Along with talking about the effects and what could be done to prevent any more damage to one's health. The group talked about how they can get the attention of the students without accidentally offending anyone.

John Hughes, Kirkwood counselor, said, "You want to approach people to create awareness, not as if you are singling them out."

One method the club uses  to raise awareness and gain the attention of students is by setting up booths in well-traveled areas of campus. The booth is set up to inform students of upcoming events or screenings, as well as provide students with information about the club and how to interact with people who have a mental illness. The group has brainstormed several ideas that would grab the attention of students, such as eye-catching posters, plinko and treats.

Anyone who has the desire to spread mental health awareness or who wants become more informed can join Active Minds.

The group meets every Thursday at 11:15 a.m. If students have any questions about Active Minds, they can contact Angie Ziesman Weiler at 319-398-5895.
