Hartunian's logic behind Kirkwood For Reason

Lydia Hartunian, a professor of humanities specializing in philosophy, advises the Kirkwood For Reason club. Hartunian said she began the club in 2002 under the name Darwin. The name Darwin essentially left students confused of what the club would be covering specifically, according to Hartunian. She said she then changed the name to Kirkwood For Reason hoping to clear confusion.

The inception of the club sprang from conversations Hartunian said she had with students. Hartunian is from New York City and she noted the vast differences between life on the East Coast and in the Midwest. The diversity, Hartunian said, made her feel like students at Kirkwood could use a place to discuss unique topics. Hartunian commented the club has not been able to meet on a regular basis this semester because of the cold but she said he hopes to catch things up when the weather is warmer.

Activities that Kirkwood For Reason participates in include meeting together and holding group discussions. The club has also done a lot of tabling on campus, said Hartunian. Tabling is where a club will set up a table with a poster to catch other students' attention in raising awareness about a specific club.

Hartunian commented on some tabling activities her club has done previous to this semester. One year the club handed out bananas on Darwin's birthday while saying, "embrace your inner primate," said Hartunian

It is a casual club, according to Hartunian. During group meetings anyone can pick a topic they want to address and drop-ins are always welcome. Kirkwood For Reason provides another place where students can meet as a community, according to Hartunian

Students participating in the club will stay connected by seeing each other around campus and communicating through e-mail, commented Hartunian

The club has a page on Facebook called Kirkwood For Reason that students interested in joining can check out. The Facebook page also holds Hartunian's club mission statement defining the overall goals of the club.

"Look out for posters around campus, also for club information," said Hartunian. Information on Kirkwood For Reason and the various other clubs can be found on Kirkwood's website on the home page under Student Life.

Students interested in finding out more information on Kirkwood clubs can find advisor e-mail information on the Clubs and Organizations page.
