Responsibility is key to adoption

With the new animal shelter on campus, Cedar Rapids Animal Care & Control is ready to help some animals find their forever home, possibly even with a student.

While taking home a dog or cat sounds like an appealing idea, it is important to avoid going into the adoption process with misconceptions of responsibility that goes into taking care of a pet.

First, students should consider the financial burden associated with caring for an animal. The cost of food alone can be astronomical for a college student. It's important to look at your budget and the prospective costs of adopting an animal to see if adoption is feasible. If money is tight, owning an animal will only make it tighter.

Potential adopters should also consider whether or not the prospective animal would have the living space that it will need to be comfortable. A large dog would probably not be welcome or comfortable in a small apartment complex. It's important to make sure pets have an environment where they can get all of the exercise they need.

Along with making sure space and money are not issues, adopters should make sure they can dedicate the large amount time and affection that all pets require.

Before adopting an animal, make sure your ready to dedicate a large portion of your time so they don't feel neglected. If you are gone from your housing for the majority of the day and won't be able to attend to your pet, adopting a high maintenance animal may not be the responsible choice.

If the adopter has the space, the money and the time, they also should make sure that the type of pet they are looking for is compatible with their personality. Meeting a dog ahead of time and getting to know it, for example, would ensure a good match and hopefully lead to a lifetime home for the animal.

With all of these things in mind, the overall theme of adoption is responsibility. Make sure adopting and owning an animal can be done in a responsible manner and both the adopter and the animals will be happier for it.
