The Oscars: The good, the funny and the awards

On March 2, 2014 the 86th annual Oscars presented awards to the finest films of the past year.

Ellen Degeneres hosted with great wit while providing lots of laughs. One of funniest moments was when she took a photo with Meryl Streep and about seven other celebrities. Degeneres did this in an attempt to create the most retweeted picture in history. It was successful and even caused Twitter to crash from the extensive amount of traffic the photo received.

On the night of the awards, "Gravity" walked away a total of seven Oscars, sweeping the technical awards and going all the way to win best original score and best directing. Despite this huge momentum, it failed to win best picture, which ended up going to "12 Years a Slave". This continues the trend that science fiction films have never won best picture and perhaps never will.

"12 Years a Slave" only won two other awards with Lupita Nyong's winning best supporting actress and best adapted screenplay.

"Dallas Buyers Club" won both supporting actor and best actor with Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey

Contrary to its 10 nominations, "American Hustle" was completely forgotten and did not win a single award.

Frozen won in both best animated feature film and best original song.

Finally, Spike Jonze won his long overdue Oscar by receiving best original screenplay for his film, "Her".

Unlike years past, there were no real surprises this year. In the end, every award that was given was well deserved.

The most touching moment for me was this year's memoriam section for all the members of the academy that died over the past year. A few of the more notable ones were Peter O'Toole, Shirley Temple, Harold Ramis, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Paul Walker.

In the end, 2014 was one of the more memorable Oscar ceremonies, not just for the winners or the host but also for the amount of genuine emotion that was seen throughout.
