IOWA CITY- Students were dancing to the beat and clapping their hands to the music of one man band Jason Ray Brown at Kirkwood Community College's Iowa City campus. The live performance was held in the commons area at 11 a.m. on Jan. 29.

Kristie Leeman, student life advisor, helped organize the event. "I found him [Brown] online on a local artist website. He was very excited to come and perform at Kirkwood's Iowa City campus because he has never been to this campus," said Leeman.

She added, "After the performance students commented they enjoyed the show."

With over 100 tour dates in a year, Kirkwood was just one of the numerous places Brown has visited. He has been contacted by  the producer of NBC's "America's Got Talent" and has even performed live for President Obama and the First Lady.

Brown is from Cedar Rapids and has 16 years of experience as  a musician. He is a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter but is also a performer and teacher. He plays blues, country, rock, soul, jazz and reggae.

During the performance Pat Keyes, English and Humanities instructor, said, "This is the kind of music I love."

Several students commented on Brown's performance as well. Asaju Walker, radiology tech emphasis, said, "The music sounds like a mix of country, rock and roll and old soul. It's nice to see people trying to make new sounds."

Deidre Funk, anthropology emphasis, said she also enjoyed the show. "It is not the genre I listen to, but he's a good musician," she said.
