Kirkwood Community College's Jazz Combo is under new direction. Local musician Al Naylor joined the staff last July.

With the new change, the jazz combo expects to have a more improved sound, Naylor said. "I'm mainly working on adding more material," Naylor said.

The jazz combo is expecting to have seven to eight songs per concert.

Along with adding more material, Naylor is also bringing  Jazz Panthers from the University of Northern Iowa to perform with the jazz combo in an upcoming concert on March 3 in Ballantyne Auditorium. The concert will be the second performance in the newly remodeled space, according to Naylor

Naylor said he hopes to see students grow in such a way musically that will prepare them for whatever may come next. "When the students move on from here they are ready to move on to the next level," explained Naylor. With the hopes of adding more music Naylor said he wants to see a better use of sight-reading among the student musicians.

In addition to the March 3 concert, the jazz combo will also be performing March 7 in Ballantyne Auditorium. Kirkwood's jazz combos focus on both traditional and contemporary styles of music according to the Kirkwood website.

Naylor also mentioned an interest in the combos and ensembles preforming more on campus in places such as The Café. He said he hopes that by being on campus more the combo band will gain more recognition from students.
