Honors program challenges students

An honors program is offered to students at Kirkwood Community College.

According to Peter Jauhiainen, professor of religion and chair of the honors program, the projects make students more qualified to be selected to four-year colleges and universities, allow them to learn more about a specific discipline and challenge them outside of class. Additionally, Jauhiainen said students could get the chance to compete for scholarships and those who earn an A or a B in their honor project can take a free course at selected local four-year colleges.

Current Kirkwood students, as well as incoming students, can apply. According to Jauhiainen, students who have a high school GPA of 3.6, an SAT score of 1170 or an ACT score of 25.2 and who are enrolled in other Kirkwood Classes during the semester of their honor projects can apply. Also, students who transfer from other colleges and universities must have a minimum GPA of 3.4 in order to apply. Current Kirkwood students must have a minimum GPA of 3.4.

Jauhiainen said qualified students work closely with their faculty mentors in order to develop a one-credit hour honors project.  He added that students choose their own topics for their honor projects and they are encouraged to select topics that showcase their unique skills.

The deadline to apply for a spring honors project is Feb. 21. Students who want to apply must write a short paragraph briefly describing their selected topic, complete a learning contract with a supervising honors faculty member, submit both the paragraph and the learning contract to the honors program faculty chair in room 330 Nielsen Hall.
