Doing the little things right

The Kirkwood Community College men's basketball game started out with good defense but the Eagles could not get going on offense on Feb. 15 against Iowa Lakes in Johnson Hall.

Early on Iowa Lakes was raining buckets from places left open. Then within three minutes until halftime, good defense turned to great defense and the Eagles went in at half only down 29-30.

Leading the revolt were commander-in-chief scorers freshmen Myzeah Batie-Gaddy and AJ Lawton with 17 points each.  Batie-Gaddy was getting it done inside the paint and out.

He took flight over two defenders in the lane slammed it down; that complimented his work from mid range.  He also grabbed seven rebounds.

"Today was all about effort, try to get on the boards, try to do the little things right to help my team get the win," said Batie-Gaddy.

His  high-soaring dunk was immediately followed by a stop what you're doing block by JC Fuller, who totaled three blocks and 10 points.

Lawton hit 10-11 of free throws; six in a row down the final stretch.  He is skilled in that aspect of the game.  He has the skill set to pull off close games with his style of play; getting to the free throw line and making them.  Combine that with his ability to find the open man raking up nine assists, he is a very well rounded player.

Joseph Tagarelli hit his first three attempts in the second half.  He totaled 14 points and eight rebounds.

The final score was Kirkwood 81, Iowa Lakes 65.  The win puts the Eagles at 16 and 9 with a playoff spot not yet clinched.

They will play against Ellsworth Community College in Johnson Hall on March 1 at 3 p.m.
