Exceeding the expectations

Midway through the season Kirkwood Community College's baseball team is only four wins away from tying its total from last season.

The Eagles are 17-5 overall and 5-3 in the ICCAC. In the latest national poll, the team narrowly missed a spot in the top 20.

The Eagles topped head coach Todd Rima's former team, North Iowa Area Community College, in the first game of a double-header by the score 14-4 in six innings on April 6.

Freshman Milton Croes fired off a homerun in the game and pitcher Collin Belk, the Eagles' leading pitcher, moved to 5-0 for the season with the win.

Kirkwood stumbled in its next three against NIACC, falling 2-8, 0-1 and 1-6.

Kirkwood swept Iowa Lakes Community College at home in four games on March 31 and April 1 to begin the conference schedule.

In the 8-7 win over Iowa Lakes on March 31, sophomore Dairo Gonzalez recorded three RBIs and a homerun. Wilfredo Feliz and Shawn Hagarty each brought in two runs.

On April 1, pitcher Cale Henke earned his third win of the season in a 10-0 shutout. Gonzalez scored two runs and brought in four in the final game against Iowa Lakes, which was a 13-8 win for Kirkwood.

On April 9, a double-header against Dakota County Technical College was canceled due to rain.

Sophomore Dairo Gonzalez leads the team for hits with 26 and RBIs with 19.

Kirkwood faces no. 3 in the nation Des Moines Area Community College on April 13 and 14 at home.
