Kirkwood Community College will host its commencement ceremony on May 17 at 10 a.m. at the US Cellular Center, according to Jill Davis, application support specialist.

Students can register online by going to, clicking the "Current Students" link and then clicking "Apply for Graduation", found under academic planning, according to Davis and Dena Dennis, registrar.

Typically around 600 students choose to walk at the graduation ceremony, Dennis said. However, even students who choose not to walk must apply to graduate, according to Davis. She added students do not need to inform the college if they plan to attend commencement or not, they need only to buy a cap and gown and show up the day of the ceremony.

Davis mentioned that Kirkwood will host a grad fair on April 29 from 9:30-1 p.m. at the Kirkwood Bookstore, where students who plan on walking can purchase a cap and gown. Students may also purchase a cap and gown online at for $29, according to Davis.

Dennis stated the amount of time it takes for a degree to come in the mail is between three and six weeks. If a student does not receive their degree they can contact Beth Tenney, records evaluator.

There is no deadline to apply for graduation and students can apply now, Dennis said. If students wish to have their name printed in the commencement program, they need to apply by April 21, according to Davis. Students who graduate in the summer are also eligible to walk at commencement in the spring, Dennis mentioned.

Davis commented that it is a fun day and usually lasts around two hours. She said it is neat to hear the different speakers. they are trying to get more students to participate, Said Dennis. She added, the students have earned it.
