Students work for financial aid

Students looking for a part-time job over a semester may want to look into Kirkwood Community College's work-study program. The work-study program is a form of financial aid where students can work flexible hours and earn money for educational or personal expenses.

Brenda Schafer, work-study coordinator, stated, "I think this program is a great opportunity for students who don't need many hours, but still want a part-time job."

Work-study jobs cover a wide variety of fields and can be found both on and off campus. "We have jobs available at all of the local Kirkwood centers and work with many non-profit organizations for off campus positions," said Schafer. She added, the program provides a lot of flexibility for students and the work can fit around a busy class schedule.

According to Schafer, the program can also be used to gain connections in a work environment. "Another benefit of the program is that it helps students to 'connect' with Kirkwood by getting their name out there. If they were to pursue work in this setting after work-study, they would already have connections made," she explained.

Schafer stated students can choose to sign up for work-study while filling out their Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) or through contacting Kirkwood's financial aid services. The FAFSA form must be completed to qualify for work-study at Kirkwood.

"Eligibility is awarded in the same way students receive their financial aid," said Schafer. She added students who are awarded work-study can accept it through EagleNet or by contacting the One Stop office. According to the work-study program's website,, most work study positions start in the fall semester and students must accept their awarded work-study before June 30.

For students who do not qualify for financial aid and are ineligible for work-study, Kirkwood does offer other non work-study positions that are part time. These can be found on the website, at

Schafer said students interested in learning more about work-study are encouraged to visit the work-study website or to call her at (319) 398-4934.
