Each October, the volleyball team at Kirkwood Community College and teams nationwide take part in Breast Cancer Awareness Month by hosting a Dig Pink match to show their support and to promote fundraising for research.

The game this year will be Oct. 26. Kirkwood will play Indian Hills Community College at 6:30 p.m. at Johnson Hall."  Students can attend this game free of charge as long as they have their EagleCard.

Dig Pink is run by the Side-out Foundation, a Virginia-based non-profit group dedicated to breast cancer awareness, education and research.

"Kirkwood joined the Dig Pink efforts three years ago," said Seth Vander Tug, Student Life director.

People who attended last year's Dig Pink game at Kirkwood set a Guinness World Record for blowing simultaneous bubbles of pink bubble gum. Vander Tuig said Kirkwood needed 250 people to create the record; 304 people showed up.

According to its website, the Side-Out Foundation was established in 2004 to unite volleyball players and coaches in a campaign to support breast cancer awareness, education and patient services. Side-Out supports teams nationwide in their volleyball tournaments, clinics and other fundraising efforts.

The funds go to organizations that do research or offer medical services and support to breast cancer patients.

"Kirkwood is also involved with other breast cancer awareness projects, such as ‘Think Pink' and ‘Pink Zone' held by the woman's basketball team," said Jill Williams, head volleyball coach at Kirkwood.
