Head coach Joe Yegge's Kirkwood Community College softball team is on the field again. The program has had a good start this season and coach Yegge stated he believes the team has all the ingredients to have another great year.

Yegge said the offense is not in mid-season form. He explained they have had to rely quite a bit on playing solid defense and having clutch pitching performances to carry them to victory.

According to Yegge, he is not worried about their offensive struggles. "Pitching is usually ahead of hitting, so we are actually in a good spot right now," said Yegge

He went on to say the more they get to practice and play outside, the easier the game will come to them. He said he believes the team will hit more consistently and start scoring runs like he knows they can, as the weather continues to warm.

One reason for Yegge's optimism he said is the pitching talent that the Eagles have on their roster. Sophomores Sam Belz and Shyanne Saladino, former teammates at Davenport West High School, have anchored the pitching staff this year and have helped the team to a successful start this season.

"We can't say we have a one-two, we just have two really good aces that can go at any time," added Yegge

The Eagle players shared coach Yegge's optimism when asked about the team's chances this year. Sophomore catcher Krysta Tutsch stated she believes that if this team can put everything together and play the way they are capable of, they should have no problem compiling a good record and reaching the playoffs again this season.

All of the players understand what it means to be part of the Kirkwood softball program. Belz summed it up when she explained what it means to her. She said it is about representing the college and being dedicated to her team and the game she plays.

The team has a busy schedule from now until the playoffs begin in May. The coaches and players said they are confident that 2014 will be another successful year for Kirkwood softball.
