Back into the swing of things

After a long winter the Kirkwood Community College men's golf team is ready to get back into the swing of things.

The Eagles haven't been able to get much practice outside during the off-season due to the weather. But, Head Coach Darin Pint hasn't failed to keep the men busy.

"We've incorporated a lot of workouts with yoga, with cardio, we have our indoor hitting facility up in Johnson Hall, our lifting regimen three times a week. So there are some things we still can do to try to keep the guys thinking golf," Pint said.

Returning sophomore Sheldon Gryp stated he feels like the indoor workouts have helped the team the best they can during the winter. Gryp stated, "It's kind of tough not being able to be outside because of the Iowa weather but we have mats inside and a putting green. That just helps us out getting our swing ready for the next stage in our season."

Now that spring is here and the snow has melted it won't be long before the Eagles can finally get out of Johnson Hall and back out onto the golf course to begin their spring season.

Gryp stated he has high hopes for the team's success this year. When asked what the team's goals were for the season, Gryp stated, "Obviously make Nationals. I'd like to win at least half of our tournaments this year and just get to Nationals and hopefully do our best there."

Coach Pint said that what he expects from his team this season is to just compete. "Every year we set our sights to win the regional tournament and go to the national tournament," he siad. The Eagles made a National Tournament appearance last year and are hoping to do that once again this season.

Currently the golf team is ranked fourth on the top 24 pational poll. The golf team had their first home meet on Sunday, March 30 and Monday, March 31 at Hunters Ridge Golf Course.
