Free Kernels game a hit
With the costs of entertainment constantly on the rise, Kirkwood Community College offers a variety of free activities for students.
On Aug. 27, Kirkwood students attended a free Cedar Rapids Kernels game sponsored by the school. By bringing their Eaglecard, students received free entry to the game.
Amanda Lara and Keaton Segebart, both freshmen and Liberal Arts students, took advantage of this free activity.
Since Lara and Segebart are not from Cedar Rapids, they had never attended a Kernel's game until the Aug. 27 game.
"I wanted to get out to do something and to see what was all throughout Cedar Rapids," Lara said. "It's interesting so far; I enjoy it."
In her search to discover the entertainment of Cedar Rapids, Lara said she is looking forward to more Kirkwood sponsored events.
"I think a lot of people would enjoy going to other Kirkwood events besides this one," Lara said. "I think if they sponsored more, it'd turn out good."
Segebart attended the game with his friends. He said he was looking for cheap ways to fight the weekday boredom and agreed that more Kirkwood sponsored events would be great for the Kirkwood community.
"I think [Kirkwood] should sponsor as many events as they can," Segebart said. "It's a great way for students to get to know each other."
Doug Nelson, general manager of the Cedar Rapids Kernels, said he loves Kirkwood Night at the Kernels because of the energetic students who attend.
"[Kirkwood students] bring so much enthusiasm when they come to the game and really cheer on the Kernels," Nelson said. "Their enthusiasm is infectious. They're having a great time and pretty soon everyone in the crowd is having a great time."
For those who missed the game, there are plenty of other Kirkwood sponsored events throughout the year, including a second Kernels game in the spring. The next event is Free Movie Night at Wynnsong on Monday, Sept. 16, from 6 to 9:30 p.m.
