Embrace community at college

Staff Editorial

On September 16, 2013

With the arrival of a new school year, it's important to consider the social community students inhabit at Kirkwood Community College.

While on the surface the student body of more than 15,000 may seem a uniform collection of individuals, the variety found within the halls is astonishing.

Traditional and non-traditional students are able to share classroom space in the common goal of learning.

Kirkwood also plays host to more than 300 international students from a wide variety of different countries and different experiences. The opportunity to meet fellow students from all over the world is a rare and valuable opportunity that should be embraced.

By engaging with and welcoming the international community, students are able to broaden their horizons and learn beyond the scope of a classroom.

Learning beyond the classroom is another important element of the school year to embrace.

Students share a space and a community where the common purpose is the pursuit of knowledge. Students can expand their horizons and learn by joining a club, tutoring, studying abroad or attending Kirkwood-sponsored events.

Student Life sponsors numerous campus events throughout the year ranging from movie nights to mini golf and musicians. Intramural sports and cheering on the Eagles are also great ways to spend time with fellow students.

In addition to Student Life events, the Fine Arts department features regular concerts from student ensembles, faculty musicians and guest artists as well as plays and art exhibitions in Iowa Hall. Information about all of these events can be found on the Kirkwood website.

Even making new friends from a different walk of life can be an important chance to learn and grow.

There are opportunities for lifelong learning in every hall and around every corner for those who take the time to look.

By taking advantage of these opportunities, students can take personal ownership of their community. They can help grow the school through actions and words and become part of something bigger.

Perhaps most importantly, the community that students share should be respected. The opportunity of getting a good education is easy to overlook as a privilege rather than a right.

Treating the opportunities granted to students with the respect they deserve goes far in keeping the community thriving.

That respect also extends to fellow learners. Simple actions like treating fellow students, instructors and staff well and keeping campus a clean, safe environment for its users all contribute to the well-being of the community.

By extending these common courtesies, all will benefit from the advantages of a strong community of learning.
