UPDATED APRIL 23

A former Kirkwood Community College student was one of three people shot in an apartment near the Cedar Rapids campus Friday afternoon.

Shannon Gaskins, 21, attended Kirkwood in fall 2010 and summer 2011, according to information released by Kirkwood on Monday.

Gaskins was shot in her apartment, 311 Kirkwood Ct. SW No. 1., Cedar Rapids police said.

Also shot were Alexander White, 22, of Cedar Rapids, and Raymond Sellers, 24, of Chicago. Police released the names of the three shooting victims Monday.

According to a press release, police received a call about 12:39 p.m. Friday from 311 Kirkwood Ct. SW No.1 saying that two people had been shot. Police responding to the call found Gaskins and White in the apartment. The two had been shot in the torso and were taken by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center.  Gaskins was transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Shortly after police arrived at the apartment, Sellers arrived at Mercy in a personal vehicle, according to police. He had gunshot wounds.

A police investigation has determined that Sellers was shot Gaskins' apartment, according to the press release.

On Friday, all three were listed in critical condition. Their present conditions have not been released.

Shooting was not on Kirkwood campus

Melissa Jensen, emergency services director at Kirkwood, emphasized that the shootings did not occur on the Kirkwood campus and that the apartment complex where the shootings occurred is privately owned.

Kirkwood Court SW, where the apartment is located, is near the north entrance to the Cedar Rapids campus.

Kirkwood Community College, Four Oaks and Prairie High School went on lockdown after the shooting was reported.

Jensen said Cedar Rapids police notified Kirkwood "very quickly" after the shooting and advised the college to lock down. She said a Kirkwood Alert lockdown message was sent out at 12:53 p.m. It advised: "Secure your classroom/office immediately. Await further directions."  A follow-up message was sent at 1:32 p.m., continuing the lockdown.  At 1:45 p.m. the lockdown was canceled, with an alert saying "police report suspects in shooting have left area."

Police seek tips from public

Police continue to investigate the shooting and are looking for information from the public.

People who have information regarding the crime are asked to call Linn County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-CS-CRIME (1-800-272-7463). Or they may text to CRIMES (274637); in the message, type 5227 and leave the tip.

If a tip leads to an arrest, the person who called or texted the information may be eligible for a reward. All calls are anonymous, according to police.
