Study strategies, healthy habits essential for finals

With finals quickly approaching it can be easy to procrastinate when it comes to  studying.   With a few simple changes, studying can be more efficient.

When asked about what study methods he prefers, Thanh Nguien, LAM management emphasis, said, "I use Evernote."  Evernote is a free app available online, as well as in the iTunes and Android stores.

Alice Popp, fashion design emphasis, said, "I will sit down, read my work and reread my work. Then when I'm done with that I summarize every chapter."

Kimberly Pritts, campus nurse, recommended incorporating healthy eating into a study routine.  She suggested five energizing items to help students think.  In moderation coffee can help with energy levels. Bananas and berries can help with memory retention. Whole grains stimulate the brain, while eating spinach helps to limit brain deterioration.

Pritts also discussed maintaining good sleeping habits.  She said, "A good six to eight hours of sleep is perfect but, along with this, you need to have a proper sleep pattern going."  Healthy sleeping habits encourage overall health as well as memory retention.
She added, "Study like you're having a conversation so you won't study just to know what you need for the test."

Pritts suggested that taking periodic short breaks between increasing study periods will help to extend the ability to focus.
