Spinning tales from the 'Krypt'

Jed Peterson, an associate history professor at Kirkwood Community College, has a long-standing love for his position.

Peterson said his appreciation for Kirkwood was natural and instant.

Peterson recalled loving the school "from the first moment [he] stepped on campus."

According to Peterson, that feeling continues as he teaches KTS and Anytime/Anywhere courses.

While recognizing difficulties in teaching distance learning courses, Peterson said he tries to channel his enthusiasm for Kirkwood as well as for the subject matter.

"There's so much stuff going on," said Peterson, appreciating how the interests of students are "filtered through" the classroom.

Peterson  discussed his efforts to have students react to events around them. Through classroom discussions and assignments, students have benefitted from the personal experiences and perspectives of others, according to Peterson.

"Any time you can make something connect to your life, it makes it more worthwhile," he said.

Peterson's recent book entitled "Hade's Gambit: Book I Of The Krypteia Conspiracy" has drawn from his enthusiasm for history.

According to Peterson, the interests of him and his co-authors, Jaren Riley and Michael Koogler, have been weaved into the book. The book refers often to historical events.

The collaboration, Peterson said, has yielded a heightened text. However, he said he believes that 'Hade's Gambit' is accessible to readers.

In Hade, Peterson said he hopes to have created an character whose behavior will inspire both love and hate in readers.

The trio attended comic conventions and held a book signing at the Cedar Rapids Barnes & Noble.
