Iowa City club a haven for non-traditional Kirkwood students

IOWA CITY- Life is a bumpy road,  making it difficult for students to breathe and relax. There is one place at the Kirkwood Community College's Iowa City Campus that will help adult students do just that.

The Adult Student Club meets every other Thursday at 11 a.m. during the activity hour in room 263.

The club started last fall in September and is mainly about helping students navigate college so they don't feel overwhelmed.

Shelby Myers-Verhage, club advisor, said, "A year ago students in my college prep writing class were having a conversation about starting the adult student club. We were having a discussion about the needs of adult students as opposed to students who are younger and straight out of high school. For example, people who are parents and others."

This club doesn't have a president or a vice president. According to Myers-Verhage, "They were open to no leadership. They didn't want to have any elections, they just wanted to be an open group for anybody."

She also said, "The students that I was talking to were saying how when you come back to school for the first time after being away, it's very challenging. You don't always know who to ask for help. You don't always know how to work in groups with peers. You haven't had to deal with teachers for a really long time, or homework, or the library or learning technology so it was a lot of new things at once."

Anyone interested in joining the Adult Student Club should contact Shelby Myers-Verhage at shelby.myers-verhage@kirkwood.edu or go to online and look at their blog at http://msshelbymv.wordpress.com/. Students can also stop by the next meeting in room 263 for more information.
