The jazz ensembles at Kirkwood Community College will be performing today at 7 p.m. at Gatherings. Al Naylor, director of instrumental jazz, said, "It's going to be a lot of fun."

This will be Naylor's first concert as director of instrumental jazz. Naylor was appointed this summer after Dr. Tim Feldkamp retired in July. "We're excited to have him here at Kirkwood," said Jennifer Cunningham, department coordinator for Arts and Humanities. According to Cunningham, Naylor is a member of the Iowa Jazz Educators Hall of Fame as the retired band director for Linn-Mar High School and is a fixture in the local jazz community as a solo artist and a trumpet player for the CR Big Band.

Naylor said he was excited for the ensembles to perform. "The classes are going really well. We're ready to do some playing," he said.

Naylor said the program will include jazz standards such as Count Basie and Quincy Jones arrangements, as well as a piece written by Naylor himself. "We're doing a piece I wrote called "Groove, in the First Degree," Naylor said.

Naylor will also be performing alongside his students. "I will play on 'Jumpin' at the Woodside'. The students like me to play a little bit because I've done a lot of playing in the area. I'm the lead trumpet with CR Jazz Big Band," he said.

The concert will be held at Gatherings, a space in the NewBo district, according to Naylor. "The space isn't bad. It's a little small but there's plenty of room for people to sit at the tables. They serve food and there's no cover charge," Naylor said.

Gatherings is located at 905 Third Street SE in Cedar Rapids. The concert begins at 7 p.m. and there is no admission fee.
