Salt Company offers college students the true message of Christian faith

IOWA CITY-"Our goal is not to come up with new ideas or search for innovative paths to reach people for Jesus, we literally sing songs about Jesus and we teach the Bible and God does the work."

Those are the words of Iowa City Salt Company Director Drew Stevenson, describing what the Salt Company is about.

Salt Company is a campus ministry group that was started in Ames. Salt branched out to Iowa City four years ago and meets every Thursday of regular class weeks.

Stevenson explained the Salt Company is an outreach for not only those who have not yet heard God's word but that it is also for those who have heard God's word.

He said, "People who have grown up in sort of mainline Christianity churches who think they know what Christianity is but they really don't know the true message of Christianity."

Stevenson stated, "So we see a lot of students who come here and initially they think 'I came here because I'm a Christian and I want to be part of a Christian organization'." He added, "But it is essentially helping them see in the Bible that maybe they don't know Jesus and maybe they are the very ones that we came here to reach and that they need to actually place their personal faith in Him."

The Salt Company has seen growth and success in it's four years in Iowa City, he said.

Stevenson explained, "I would say that maybe the coolest major part of our success is the number of people who have been baptized. Every semester we see between 10 to 20 students get baptized within our ministry and that just means that people are meeting Jesus, coming to know Him in a personal relationship and growing in that relationship with Him."

He said, "The other cool major part of our success is the amount of leaders within our ministry. Every semester we're pretty much doubling our leadership team which has been really cool to see.

"That's what Jesus told us to do, to make disciples of all nations," added Stevenson.

He shared his goals and those of Salt. He explained that they want to expand the Salt ministry throughout the corridor area.

How the goal of the Salt Company is to have every student at the University of Iowa, Kirkwood, Coe, Mt. Mercy and all throughout the area to hear about Jesus and to develop a relationship with Him.

"I would just say that don't think just because you grew up in the church that you've heard it all before. Maybe there's some things you're missing in the Bible and that you haven't heard and haven't realized about Jesus and we would encourage you to come hear what God's word has to say and test it for yourself," he said.
