All but one of the railcars sitting behind the Industrial Technology buildings have been demolished and removed.

The railcars have been a part of Kirkwood for years. "For the past eight years there have been railcars sitting behind the industrial tech buildings," Tom Kaldenberg, associate vice president of facilities and security, said.

According to Kaldenberg, the railcars were not sitting there without a purpose. The cars played a key role in training students in the industrial tech field.

"They were used for OSHA confined space and leak containment training," Kaldenberg said. This training helped students learn how to perform safe practices in the industrial field.

The college decided to remove the railcars earlier this spring.

Kaldenberg stated, "We are getting rid of most of the cars because there is very little demand for the training, so they are no longer needed."

One of the cars is being relocated to the Kirkwood Continuing Education Training Center and will still be used for training purposes.
