Bullet points are key to eye-catching resume
As the end of the school year approaches, many Kirkwood Community College students must decide what step is next in their lives. If your next step is entering the work force, you will need a resume.Luckily, you can find help at Kirkwood.
Danielle Ebaugh, career services coordinator at the Cedar Rapids campus, holds workshops focusing on job interviews, job applications and cover letters, and resume writing and critiquing.
Ebaugh assists students in finding a career path and making sure they are in the best position possible when they go for interviews.
The most important thing to remember about your resume, Ebaugh said, is that it needs to mirror the job you are applying for. "It's a constantly changing document. Each position that you apply for is different, and some things should be on your resume for one position, but not for another," she said.
Additionally, she stressed the layout of the resume.
"Use bullet points, not paragraphs," she said. "Your potential employer only glances over your resume for 15-20 seconds, and if they don't see something to make it stand out, they aren't going to look any further. They don't want to have to read through paragraphs to find out your information.
"You could be the most qualified person for the job, but if your resume isn't planned and laid out correctly, you probably won't be successful in your job search."
Ebaugh encouraged people to take advantage of the job search workshops. She said that on average seven to 10 people attend these workshops, but stressed the workshops are a free resource that should be taken advantage of.
Although the workshops are held in Cedar Rapids, anyone is welcome to attend, she said.
