Slammin' to success

The Eagles are wasting no time slamming their way to another promising season.

After setting a new record last year recording 99 homeruns, the Kirkwood Community College softball team is on pace to have a shot at breaking the 100-homerun milestone in 2013.

Kirkwood has smacked 25 homeruns with 417 at-bats in its first 15 games this season while earning a 12-3 overall record. Only two teams in NJCAA Division II softball have recorded more homers, with 980 and 745 at-bats each.

Sophomore Haylee Krack leads Kirkwood with seven round-trippers followed by sophomore Kayla Tatge with six. Five Eagles combine for the other 12 homeruns this season.

At the pitcher position, two Eagles hold records of 4-0 apiece. Freshman Shyanne Saladino and freshman Sam Belz have averaged 2.37 and 1.01 ERA, respectively, in their wins this season.

Kirkwood went 8-1 over spring break while traveling across the Midwest in Kansas and Missouri. The Eagles split with Central Methodist University's JV on March 18, dropping the first game 3-4 and winning the second 15-7.  The following day the Eagles faced Central Methodist again in a double-header and disposed of them 15-0 and 10-2.

The Eagles recorded two big wins on the road on March 20 with scores of 9-0 and 15-1 over Ottawa University.

A win over Kanakee Community College on March 8 gave head coach Joe Yegge his 300th career win as a NJCAA Division II softball coach. Of those wins, 219 have come while coaching at Kirkwood.

Four double-headers scheduled for last week were canceled due to inclement weather.

The Eagles face three conference opponents at home on April 3, 5 and 7.
