The weather was cold and snowy in Cedar Rapids but the Kirkwood Community College baseball team was hot over spring break. While competing near the East coast of Florida, the Eagles posted a 6-2 record and improved to 10-2 on the season.

The Eagles have played in eight games this season decided by one run. In six of those games, Kirkwood has come out on top.

Head coach Todd Rima said he is impressed with the way the Eagles have handled the close games.

"We've had great composure," said Rima. "We've come up with big plays when we've needed to win games."

Kirkwood was two spots away from earning a national rank in the March 13 NJCAA Division II poll. Conference and regional foes Des Moines Area Community College and Iowa Central Community College earned the no. 4 and no. 9 rank, respectively.

Rima said he believes the Eagles are in a position to keep improving and to be able to compete with the best teams in their league.

Sophomore pitcher Collin Belk has been 3-0 on the mound this season. Freshman Brian Daphney is 2-0 and has thrown 13 strikeouts. Jean Carlos Rosario also has 13 strikeouts so far this season.

"Pitching has been tremendous," said Rima. "Our pitchers have thrown strikes and kept us in games."

Sophomore Wilfredo Feliz leads the Eagles for hits with 19 while batting .432. Sophomore Dennis Colon and freshman Roly Hernandez have each recorded 10 RBIs for Kirkwood this season.

Rima said the team is not concerned about the recent wintery weather.

"Having games canceled is no fun," Rima said, "but our motto is that we don't worry about what we can't control."
