Study abroad in Ghana

Several study abroad programs are offered by Kirkwood Community College. This year a new destination was added to the already diverse list: Ghana.

Kirkwood has teamed up with Cross-Cultural Solutions (CCS), which is a non-profit organization. CCS works to give volunteer service to people and communities abroad, according to Ken Nesbett, study abroad advisor.

On this particular service learning study abroad program to Ghana, Nesbett said Kirkwood students will pair up not only with other Kirkwood students but with students from Australia, Canada and Singapore.

While studying abroad in Ghana, students will volunteer for two weeks and earn three college credits.

According to Nesbett, their time will be split between participating in activities and doing volunteer work. Volunteers will work alongside local individuals in Ghana.

Participants will have a choice of what type of volunteer work they want to do. Volunteering options include teaching English to children and adults, working with individuals with disabilities, assisting with infants and children or helping those with health issues, including those with HIV/AIDS, according to Nesbett.

Nesbett added that some of the attractions scheduled for the Ghana program include visiting Kakum National Park, exploring Cape Coast and visiting the capital city Accra.

In regard to the safety of Ghana, Nesbett stated, "Kirkwood would never schedule a program to somewhere unsafe. Ghana is the Switzerland of Africa."

The Ghana program is open to all Kirkwood students and non-Kirkwood students.

There is a $1,500 scholarship to assist participants with the program fee. The application deadline for this study abroad program is Dec.15 and students can apply directly online.
