Thanks for a great year

Staff Editorial

On April 30, 2013

We'd like to thank the students this year for going out of their way to be respectful to others and the shared spaces on campus, especially in the following ways:

•  The polite people fill the hallways and wish each other a great day of classes. Students who never fail to hold doors for others walking behind them and who are never rude or mean to one another.

•  One of the most common ways people are polite at Kirkwood is their impeccable parking etiquette. Everyone always leaves extra space for the other people in surrounding spaces. Most people even manage to stay even on both sides of the spot. We never see anyone parking incorrectly by taking up in two or even three spots simultaneously. Motorcyclists always use the dedicated parking area instead of taking up an entire parking space.

•  Even with the large student body, the campus is always clean because no one ever leaves trash on the grounds or in the hallways. The trash cans and commingling bins scattered throughout every hallway are the only places where garbage can be found on Kirkwood's campus.

•  Cell phones usually cause problems but not at Kirkwood. When there are rules about cell phones in classrooms all the students obey them without fail. When people do get phone calls, they quietly excuse themselves and talk quietly in the hall, never swearing or shouting.

•  The hallways are filled with people conversing politely with each other instead of accidentally walking into others or walls from texting while walking.

•  Another thing that exemplifies Kirkwood's good etiquette is the use of the elevators in each hall. All elevators are used quite frequently because of the traffic in the hallways. People never fail to get on the elevator on one side and get off on the other instead of blocking the middle. This allows traffic to move effortlessly on and off the elevators. Students are also always respectful of those who need to use the elevators for health reasons.

•  Bathrooms on campus are another place where Kirkwood reigns supreme. The toilets are clean and have air fresheners that make the rooms smell better. The universal automatic flushers make it easier for people have access to a clean bathroom and never waste water through unnecessary, repeated flushes.

•  People who are in the bathroom always have respect for others' space and never talk loudly on their phones.

We want to say thank you to everyone at Kirkwood for their exemplary behavior over the past year. We are thankful we didn't have to write a staff editorial about it.
