  • Damsels and Monsters, the product of collaboration between artist and Kirkwood student Jonah Lorsung and artist Zach Kulish, will be auctioned off at an exhibit to be held today. This piece, along with others in the collection, aims to explore ideas of female imperfection, according to Lorsung. Today, the Shores Event Center in Cedar Rapids will host "Damsels and Monsters," an art exhibit by Kirkwood Community College art student Jonah Lorsung and fellow artist Zach Kulish.  Their visual exploration of women, beauty and the monstrous will be on display from 5 to 9 p.m.

The exhibition will feature the auction of the title piece, a collaboration between the two artists, with other pieces and prints available for sale.  The proceeds from the sale of the title work will be donated to Waypoint Services, a local women's shelter that offers support to women in crisis and child care services.

The show has a strong connection to the decision to donate to charity.  The artists draw and paint women who, according to Lorsung, "in society's views, are not perfect." These 'damsels' are juxtaposed against demonic creatures, such as Frankenstein's monster in an artistic vision of beauty against beast. "People can be monsters," Lorsung remarked.

The first 50 guests to the exhibition will receive free limited edition prints from the artists.  Prints of the artists' work will also be available, with 50 percent of the proceeds donated to Waypoint.  Admission is free.

The Shores Event Center is located in the Irish District at 700 16th St. NE in the historic Shores-Mueller building.
