Gotta catch Black & White 2

Pokemon release updates experience for gamers

Nintendo released the newest Pokémon game, Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2, on Oct. 7. Since Pokémon had its first appearance in 1992, the games have come a long way. Unfortunately, original Pokémon fans are complaining that Nintendo is trying too hard to keep the game alive.

What some fans might not know are the many changes and improvements in the new games. One of these features is the World Tournament which allows players to battle against various characters from other Regions, which was unavailable in the original Black and White. Here, players can engage in single battles and double battles. Another new feature is PokéStar, which replaces Pokémon Musicals. PokéStar requires players to use a rental Pokémon for the first
performance, after which gamers can enter their own.

In the original games there were only 151 Pokémon total. Since Generation 5 Pokémon were introduced, the total number has skyrocketed to a staggering 649 Pokémon. To keep track of the ones seen and/or caught in the game, players are given a Pokédex.

In Pokémon Black and White 2, the Pokédex is the biggest it has ever been. There are now 300 Pokémon in the Regional Pokédex and 649 in the National. The Pokémon in the Regional Pokédexes vary between Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2 because there are exclusive Pokémon to each version.

After hearing about all the new features Black and White 2 has to offer, Kirkwood student Colin Douglas, theatre emphasis, shared his opinion on the new Pokémon games coming out, "The new games sound very nice, and they seem to have come a long way from the original where you were Ash running around, with everything as little blocks," he said.

Players can now run without holding down the "B" button, and there are other changes that streamline game play, such as an automatic prompt for "repels" in a cave. Douglas responded, "It would be very nice not having to hold down buttons anymore, or to take so much time searching for your items in your bag."

Pokémon Black and White 2 is available anywhere Nintendo DS games are sold.
