Students in Kirkwood Community College's glass blowing class describe it as "addicting."

The class is held in the Art and Theatre Annex on the main campus and is taught by Conifer Smith, associate professor of art.

The class offers hands-on training in the art of glass blowing. Due to the kilns used to heat the glass, the classroom can reach a temperature of 110 degrees, according to Smith.

The instructor stated the art of glass blowing can be difficult and students take the course multiple times to master the art. "Be ready to have your patience tested," she said.

John Kurzan, art emphasis, said he has been taking the class for four years. Kurzan recommended students who are interested in taking the class buy and read books on glass blowing prior to registration.

Kurzan added when he switched his major, he took the course for fun and immediately fell in love with glass blowing. "I'm going to do it for the rest of my life, I hope," Kurzan said.

Kurzan has a shop based out of the NewBo Market in the Czech Village, where he sells the glassware he creates.

Students interested in glass blowing are invited to stop by during class time to observe the artists at work. Smith encourages those interested to sign up on the first day of registration because the class can fill up quickly.
