Celebrate success not racism

The blessing and curse of social media is that it gives equal voice to all who use it. It allows users to view every opinion, every idea and sometimes every thought that an individual or group has with quick and easy searches. Unfortunately, this allows greater voice and prominence for the offensive, racist and crude in the coverage of events.

When Miss America, Nina Davuluri, was crowned on Sept. 15, the conversation quickly became one of ignorant bigots spouting hateful remarks on Twitter and other social media platforms.

The coverage highlighted those calling an Indian American woman a terrorist or un-American, giving the ignorant fame and rewarding their behavior with attention. While their behavior should be condemned, it should not be at the expense of celebrating an intelligent, well-spoken woman.

Davuluri's platform of spreading diversity seems all the more important in light of the ignorance displayed by a group of individuals on social media.

The conversation should change from one of disgust with the ignorant to one of embracing the positive example Davuluri set for young Americans.

By embracing diversity instead of reacting to the negativity publicly spread on the Internet and by the media, Davuluri has put her platform into practice.

Perhaps her admirable commitment to the changing face of America and the celebration of diversity and culture should be the focus of the conversation moving forward.
