Construction: Can we be done?

Jackhammers, backhoes, concrete trucks and workers in hardhats are a constant presence at Kirkwood Community College’s main campus.

As most students, staff and faculty have noticed the campus is under construction and it has been for a while now (and will probably be for a longer time).

Almost everywhere, whether it is on campus, the interstate or the Angel website, people seem to just loathe construction season. Many people on campus see all this construction as a nuisance and just wish it would end. While it can be frustrating to have to find alternate routes or find other accommodations for a class, people should really see these struggles as a blessing.

Due to the construction students and instructors may have an excuse to be a few minutes late to class. No one really needs to know that you wanted to pass one more level on Angry Birds before heading to class, just say you were delayed by construction. Everyone can understand how construction can interfere, especially with new students who are not even sure where everything is in the first place.

Another reason to embrace the construction is that it shows how much Kirkwood respects students and faculty by providing state-of-the-art equipment and modern atmospheres in which to work and learn. Honestly, people should see construction as a good thing.

For those students who have graduated or will be graduating soon, they know how hard it can be to find a job. All the construction and maintenance means more jobs for more people who are out in the real world. Seeing all this work open up for people will only help this economy and it starts at this micro-level.

Each construction project is a step in the right direction. So, people of Kirkwood Community College, learn to embrace this change with a little exercise to the side door while the weather is nice.
