Kirkwood Community College’s Eagles volleyball hosted the Hawks of Northeast Community College on Sept. 3.  Kirkwood set the tone early in game one gaining the first two points with spikes.

Sophomore Heather Poula, who is credited with one of the two spikes, racked up a total of 19 kills and was a major contributor to the team’s 1-3 match victory.  Poula played all four sets.

Poula discussed what led her to being successful on the court. “Definitely practice, we worked individually on certain aspects of the game; and I couldn’t have done it without my teammates because they pulled the blocks so I had the open hit,”  said Poula.

The Eagles won game one 11-25.  Game two was closer but the Eagles edged out Northeast 23-25.

Sophomore Peyton Hilton earned recognition with eight kills and 33 percent of her touches were for points.

Then in game three Kirkwood almost rallied from behind 13-19 but the Hawks held on to the lead winning 25-22.

Kirkwood bounced back and won game four 25-15.  The Eagles led the entire set.  Freshman Halle Lueck played well consistently through the match.  She had 67 percent of her taps go for points.

Also contributing to the win were sophomores Becca Bell and Megan Allmandinger who had 15 kills between the two of them.

Erin Wenzel had a high percentage of touches for points making the time she played count by racking up 5 kills.

Freshmen Raegan Menke played effective minutes scoring 5 kills.  And Audrey Richards had 3 served aces playing through four sets.

The Eagles will compete in the Parkland Tournament in Champaign, Ill., Sept. 19 – 20 and will be back in Johnson Hall on Sept. 24 to face Clinton Community College.
